| HISTORY OF THE HOUSE |
| |
| Teach Bhride build as a Brigidine Novitiate in 1905, provided a training centre for young Brigidines from the beginning of the century until 1971. |
|
| In the late 1970s the house was leased to the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin and established as a House of Welcome for Young People. At that time the house was given the name, Teach Bhride. In the decade that followed the project flourished and the house became known throughout Ireland as a centre of reflection and hospitality for 18 – 25 year olds.
With the decline of this project in the 1990s the property became vacant. |
| |
| Then in 1999 it was re-opened by the Brigidine Sisters as a Holistic Education Centre. Because of the open, hospitable reputation the house had gained as a welcoming place for young people, it was decided to retain the name, Teach Bhride (the House of Brigid) – symbolic of the hospitable ethos and open welcome that the Centre extends to all who visit or participate in activities. |
|
| In 2007, as a Brigidine/Carlow-Leader bi-centenary project, an extension was added to the building, which included the installation of a lift and en-suite rooms for people with disabilities. A sun-room was also added. |
